My dear Rawlinson,
With reference to the question which you asked me last Tuesday about a Murder Trial at Hong Kong, I am now able to give you further information which we have obtained from the Governor by telegram. He reports that the prisoners were convicted of manslaughter, but that the conviction was quashed by the full court because the evidence was not fully interpreted to the prisoners.
A new indictment was filed, and they were re-arrested, but a nolle prosequi has been entered owing to the absence of a material witness.
I think you will regard this as satisfactory.
Yours very truly,
Same letter also sent to J. Dundas White, Esq., M.P.
